News Corp.’s Digital Publication The Daily To Lay Off One Third Of Their Staff
News Corp.’s, The Daily, a digital newspaper tailored for tablets and mobile devices, announced today it plans to lay off nearly one third of their staff according to a report in All Things Digital. The move comes just 18 months after the digital news venture’s highly-publicized launch.
The digital paper plans to fire 50 of its 170 employees on Tuesday. The report claims that the editorial and sports section are going to be “heavily hit by the layoffs,” but the cuts will also affect the publication’s design and production staff.
News Corp. officials have publicly defended The Daily, which News Corp. CEO Rupert Murdoch thought would serve as a template for newspapers’ transition to the tablet era. Murdoch’s team worked closely with Apple and its late CEO Steve Jobs to produce a publication initially tailored for the iPad.
News Corp.’s print publications are not faring particularly better in the new media environment where sources of information have proliferated. The Wall Street Journal has also been sheading staff recently and ended publication of its personal finance magazine SmartMoney.
Last month, News Corp. announced that it would split and spin off its entertainment holdings from its print divisions. Entertainment providers like 20th Century Fox and Fox News would be split from printing services like The Times of London and book publishers like Harper Collins.
